A Cessna 208B Grand Caravan is a turboprop passenger aircraft marketed by Cessna. It is a high-wing, single-engine, eight-seat, low-wing monoplane that was designed exclusively for the civil aviation market. Constant improvements to the basic design and production methods have kept the aircraft in production since its introduction in 1963.

The first Cessna 208B GRAND CARAVAN EX model was delivered to Trans World Airlines (TWA) in 1964. This was followed by two more TWA deliveries and four deliveries to Eastern Airlines before the model reached production on January 23rd 1965. The Cessna Model 205 Skywagon, launched at the same time as the Grand Caravan, became very successful and quickly became the largest selling light aircraft of all time.

Cessna has produced over 13,000 units of this aircraft throughout its history. The current version is known as the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EXE.

The interior design of this model is quite minimalistic, with only eight seats and a cockpit that has room for two pilots. Additionally, there are two aft baggage compartments, with one being accessible from inside the aircraft.

The Grand Caravan’s cruising speed is 161 miles per hour or 259 kilometres per hour, depending on load and how many passengers are on board. This type of aircraft typically travels at a speed of 235 km/h but can reach up to 269 km/h when fully loaded. It has a takeoff weight of 7,200 lbs or 3,270 kgs.

Chinese Manufacturing:

In May 2012, Cessna announced establishing a 208 assembly line in China, with the government-owned China Aviation Industry General Aircraft (CAIGA) doing the final assembly of Caravans for the Chinese market at its factory in Shijiazhuang.

The Chinese government gave its license in September of the following year, and the first Caravan built in China was delivered in December of that year. The joint business has delivered roughly 30 aircraft to Chinese operators by April 2016, constructed from kits of parts sent from the United States by Cessna.

Variants:

The basic design of the Grand Caravan was updated in 2001 with the introduction of the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX.

In 2007, Cessna introduced another variant of this aircraft, the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan FEX. This model is powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-114A turboprop engine rated at 1,350 shaft horsepower.

There are also two other variants on this aircraft that offer cargo capability. These are the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan GAW and the Cessna 208B Grand Caravan HAWK models.

Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EXE aircraft have a number of benefits. For example, it is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney PT6A-112 engine that provides more power and a higher cruising speed. It also has a modern glass cockpit.

The Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EXE offers seating for up to nine passengers with an option for adding more seats on some models. The cabin can be configured with either two or four rows of seating. In the event of an emergency, there are two emergency exits for each row of seating.

It also has an autopilot system, three-axis autopilot, and TCAS II Traffic Protection System that monitors air traffic in the cockpit. This aircraft has no pilot requirement, making it perfect for cross-country flights.

Safety features include a ballistic airframe parachute recovery system and a crash-resistant fuel system.

Experimental:

The eCaravan is an electric aircraft created by AeroTEC and magniX that is driven by a 750 horsepower (560 kW) motor and a 1 t (2,200 lb) 750V lithium-ion battery. On May 28th, 2020, it took off from Grant County International Airport in Moses Lake, Washington, for a 30-minute flight that consumed $6 in power and took 30-40 minutes to charge. The Magni500-powered model can fly 100 miles (160 kilometres) with 4-5 people while maintaining reserve power, and the company hopes to be certified by the end of 2022, allowing it to travel 100 miles with a full load of nine passengers and improved batteries.

Wow, this looks a lot fancier then  my dad’s supercub which seat 3 people.  He keeps it in pristine condition and has his own hangar and all.  But in Alaska, that is the only way to go…mostly…if you can afford the hangar.  Anyway, I am just staring out with getting my pilots lesson on his insistence.  Makes sense since one day I might need to take over.  If I could have a plane like this, that would be wonderful!
