Aviatt Pitts Special s2s:

Curtis Pitts created the Pitts Special (company designations S-1 and S-2) line of small aerobatic biplanes. Since its initial flight in 1944, it has won several competitions. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Pitts biplanes dominated the global aerobatic competition, and they are still competitive in the lowest categories today.

Design & Development:

In 1943–1944, Curtis Pitts began work on a single-seat aerobatic biplane. [3] Since the prototype first flew in September 1944, the design has been progressively modified; yet, the contemporary Pitts S-2 is still quite close to the original in concept and design.

Curtis Pitts’ aircraft was nicknamed “Stinkers” because they had a skunk on the front. “Big Stinker” was the name of the prototype S-2, the first two-seat Pitts, while “Super Stinker” was the name of the prototype Model 11 (later known as S-1-11B). After acquiring it, Betty Skelton, an aerobatic performer, nicknamed Curtis’ second plane “Little Stinker”.

Curtis Pitts founded Pitts Enterprises in 1962 to market S-1C blueprints to homebuilders.

Current Version:

Aviat Aircraft in Afton, Wyoming, currently produces certified variants of the Pitts. It comes in two versions: a single-seater with a 200 horsepower (150 kW) flat-4 Lycoming engine and a 17 ft 4 in (5.28 m) wingspan, and a two-seater with a 260 hp (194 kW) flat-6 Lycoming engine and a 20 ft (6.1 m) wingspan. Engines as powerful as 450 horsepower have been fitted to Pitts Specials (338 kW).

Steen Aero Lab in Palm Bay, Florida, provides the S-1C and variant S-1SS designs and kits. Aviat Aircraft also provides plans for the single-seat Pitts S-1S. Since the designs were first made available in 1960, hundreds of homebuilders have finished and flown the Pitts.

S-2B:

The S-2B was constructed by Aerotek and had a single cockpit and a twin-tank fuel system. To accommodate the bigger 260 horsepower (194 kW) Lycoming AEIO-540-D4A5 engine, the fuselage is lengthened by 14 inches (35 cm) ahead of the cockpit. The wingspan is 20 feet, 0 inches (6.10 meters), and there are 17 of them built. Although this model is no longer in production, Aviat Aircraft continues to maintain it.

S-2B:

In unlimited class competition, the two-place Pitts Special S-2B can be flown. It is our most popular model and is excellent for advanced aerobatic teaching. Most trainees who have studied in slower, less responsive aerobatic aircraft find that performing moves properly in the Pitts involves less effort. Simply simple, Pitts pilots have a lot more fun!

The S-2B is clearly capable of sophisticated acrobatics, yet it is simple enough to fly for pilots who are just getting started with aerobatics. The S-2C has replaced the S-2B, and it is no longer manufactured. Aviat Aircraft, on the other hand, carries a complete line of genuine manufacturer’s replacement parts.

S-1-11B:

Curtis Pitts developed the plane he believed would be required for World Aerobatic Contest level flying into the next millennium. What distinguishes the S-1-11B/Super Stinker from his other world-beating designs? The difference is made up of 300 horses and 35 years of expertise.

S-1T:

There are no production plans available. On-demand production of the S-1T is possible. Plans for the Pitts S-1S, on the other hand, maybe purchased for $395. Aviat Aircraft also has a complete line of genuine manufacturer’s replacement parts.

Aviat Pitts s2s in Flight Simulator:

Curtis Pitts designed the Pitts Special, a series of small single-engine aerobatic biplanes that first flew in September 1944. The single-seat 5-1 and the tandem two-seat S-2 are the two main versions of the series. Pitts Specials are known for their accuracy in performing very precise manoeuvres, including high-g aerobatics. In this aircraft type, a number of world records have been established, including an inverted flat spin.

Pitts Special biplanes are small: the 5-1 is 15 feet 6 inches (4.72 meters) long, while the S-2 is 18 feet 9 inches long (5.72 m). The 5-1 has a sweeping upper wing and a straight lower wing, with an upper wingspan of 17 ft 4 in (5.28 m).

Pitts Special biplanes can reach speeds of 182 knots (337 kilometres per hour), have a service ceiling of 21,000 feet, and climb at a rate of 2,700 feet per minute. Soon after its launch, the Pitts Special made a name for itself and dominated international aerobatic events in the 1960s and 1970s. It is still a fan favourite at airshows today.

  2. I had been reading about The Pitts Special which was the company designations S-1 and S-2. I was fascinated by this series of light aerobatic biplanes designed by Curtis Pitts. No wonder it has accumulated many competition wins since its first flight in 1944. So, now that I am reading about Aviat Pitts Special s2s, I really enjoyed it!
