Microsoft’s Flight Simulator is, arguably, our first look at an actual next-generation gaming experience. The visual bar is undoubtedly raised, and the inevitable comparisons to Crysis as a system-melter are not without foundation. Let’s put it this way: being able to sustain 60 frames per second while maintaining the game’s next-gen sheen requires powerful hardware. Let’s see how you can have the best settings for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
For a Flight Simulator to run correctly on the PC, windows have to be updated, update the graphic card, increase computer virtual memory and storage, uninstall some program to free up computer space, update the video card to the most recent version, and ensure no other programs is running on the background of the desktop or laptop. An anti-virus program can slow some programs, so it is a good idea to disable anti-virus software temporarily or add the Flight Simulator program to the exception list.
The game’s official website simply describes this as “one of the most advanced flight simulation games ever released”. However, to accurately point out the game’s impressive evolution (or regression, depending on how you see it), we’re going to be focusing on just three specific things: settings, sounds and performance.
Before talking about those sections, let’s take a look at graphics first. Although it’s not as fantastical as the effects available on the upcoming high-resolution Crysis 2, the graphics options available here are impressive. We see an increase in textures, transparency, water, terrain detail, light and colour depth. Our test rig is reasonably well-equipped: an i5 3570, an Asus X6800 GPU, 3GBs of RAM and two sticks of 8GB Crucial M4 EVO SATA (256GB) hard drive.
It doesn’t surprise me that Microsoft Flight Simulator was one of the visual standouts of 2020. The series has always been as much a technical showcase as anything, an excuse to invest in hundreds of dollars worth of joysticks and pedals, or for the top-tier enthusiasts, in actual cockpit reproductions.
Its replay-ability seems endless since you can fly anywhere on Earth, in a wide array of weather conditions, in an array of different airframes. And most importantly, Flight Simulator offers all of this stuff while looking absolutely stunning in the process. But just like in real life, beauty can be a pain.

Flight Simulator. To be honest, it was the most stable of all the software we tested with.
Let’s see how you can have the best settings:
Memory. It’s one of the parts you need to pay attention to. Because of aircrafts, it will always be full of memory, but the important thing is to keep the rest of your computer feeling nice and cool. A lower number of songs and sound files will keep the computer from overloading.
HD Video. Your HD video will benefit from a large amount of RAM and a faster processor, so keep it to a low setting, and you won’t be noticed.
Screen Resolution. Not everyone has the best computer available, so if you’re on a Mac, or maybe you’re on a budget, try to keep your screen’s resolution at 1280×720. Don’t go higher than 1280×720, or it’ll be obvious you’re playing a Microsoft game.
Noise Reduction. Don’t forget that the vast majority of people have good hearing and would be shocked to hear your PC screaming as you fly a plane.
You need extreme hardware:
To accomplish this, you’ll need to have three factors of extreme relevance to the game. The first is a top-of-the-range system running at full HD. Second, you’ll need all the DirectX 11 features enabled, and third, you’ll need to be running DirectX 10.5 or better.
Older Microsoft Flight Simulator is a great example of where proper colour correction is very much required. These games use a pre-colour corrected graphics pipeline, so colours are muted and often muddy as they were made in past years. Most people have, by now, moved on to better titles in the run-up to today’s AAA title releases, so if you are looking for your next flight sim to be of the utmost quality, this is something you should look into.
Disable Hardware Acceleration:
If you aren’t using a GPU, disable hardware acceleration for one or more of the GPU’s cores. To do this, click the gear icon in the lower right corner and click Properties. On the main tab, Performance Settings, click the gear icon, click Advanced Settings, and then click Software Settings. Next, click Hardware Acceleration and choose either disabled or ‘Off’.
The CPU can handle the load, but the GPU will not. However, it’s one of the best sacrifices you can make. If you’re gaming with a GPU, enable hardware acceleration, and the performance will increase. This will cut down your frame rate in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 in half, which is not ideal.
Enable Game Mode:
By enabling game mode, you’re going to have a better experience and enjoy flying more in MFS.
Cancel/Resume for change Right-click the Flight Simulator: Aircraft tab and click the “A” button. On the title screen, simply click on the Settings button and then Game Mode. Select Resume/Cancel. With it set to default, nothing is saved. The next time you load the game, you’ll need to do it all over again.
Change Rendering Mode. Before you adjust the resolution, head over to the menu and select a Rendering Mode. You can choose between three:
Very High: maxes out the GPU for maximum visuals,
Low: your best possible setup.
Set up your ESRAM In order to play Crysis or whatever, you need to have a good amount of memory available for ESRAM. So to add the extra RAM required, head over to the options menu and set the memory type to Normal. Disable Jitter!
Best Nvidia Settings for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020:
If you want to enjoy the max capabilities of your Nvidia video card with Microsoft Flight Simulator, use the following settings guidelines.
Open Nvidia Control Panel, go to 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings, select Program Settings tab and from the list, select Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The purpose of this guide was to show how we can maximize Windows Aero to its fullest extent by setting realistic lighting, choosing the right GPU and setting advanced graphics. This can be a good document for having the best performance with MFS regarding what settings you need in order to get the best experience.
It is only through my own experiences that I managed to create a top-notch cockpit simulator in the comfort of my own home. I’ve tested MFS at various settings, and in most cases, it’s most likely best to opt for a half-decent GPU. However, since you’re not restricted to AMD or NVIDIA products here, you should be able to get the most performance from your preferred card. Your mileage may vary, however. I tested with my GT5 card.
