Gaming has come a long way. It has had big steps forward. There have been boundary-pushing, transformational next-gen game developments in the gaming industry. And now everything is cloud powered. But it was quite different before all that. One of the games that changed the entire gaming landscape was the Microsoft Flight Simulator. It unlocked the potential of computing. A glimpse into its history will make one realize how far we have come. Building games across all platforms has become a whole lot easier. If you are a publisher or gamer who is interested in the history of the Microsoft Flight Simulator, you have come to the right place. This post aims to cover its development and progress.

Developed by SUBLOGIC, The Microsoft Flight Simulator was possibly one of the greatest inventions of its time and released in 1982 under a publishing agreement with Microsoft. Looking at it today, it was an amateur flight simulation light years ahead of its time for personal computers (PCs). It all began as three-dimensional computer graphics articles written by Bruce Artwick in 1976.

When magazine subscribers expressed interest in purchasing the program, he set out to develop it and founded SUBLOGIC Corporation, which produced Flight Simulators for numerous computer platforms such as 8080 and IMSAI 8080 microcomputers. In 1982, they licensed an IBM PC version from TRS-80 with CGA graphics from his company for distribution by Microsoft Corporation on an OEM basis through IBM PC stores as well as direct mail order sales via their website which became known as The Mall® on MSN® before being renamed Windows LiveTM Marketplace when Windows VistaTM was released . It debuted as First edition; however it had not been an application software package requiring an operating system because it came pre-installed within Operating System.

After leaving SUBLOGIC, Bruce Artwick formed The Bruce Artwick Organization, where he continued to enhance the Microsoft Flight Simulator. The Microsoft Flight Simulator was released in 1988 and matured commercially when version 3.1 arrived. This used graphical hardware acceleration and 3D Graphics to make it the ultimate Flight Simulator. But Microsoft kept on adding new features to the software such as newer augmented sceneries and aircraft types so they could produce newer versions of the program. For instance, subsequent versions for instance were available in (2000) and (2002). These came in standard and professional editions with more scenery options, tools and aircraft types coming alongside.

The edition that came after this was in 2004 which celebrated one hundred years since powered flight was achieved. It was only one version, being its ninth iteration till date it only had one edition. That led to Flight Simulator X being released in 2006; it went back to two concurrent editions i.e., standard and deluxe editions.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Gameplay:

1982 to 2020

When people use the Microsoft Flight Simulator, they know that it covers the whole earth. It is detailed to varying degrees and has over 24,000 airports. As newer versions emerged, an endless list of scenery kept gamers enthralled. It was like you were actually there; the game captured familiar cities and popular landmarks. The further the gameplay goes from a populated area, particularly when it’s out of United States, becomes scarce in landscape details. To alleviate this problem there are several websites providing scenery Add-ons. Three recent versions even included sophisticated weather simulation by using real-world weather data that became clear in flight simulator 2000 for instance. The new versions also came with other features such as modern Boeing 777 aircrafts, air traffic environment with interactive air traffic control functions, interactive lessons and challenges as well as aircraft checklists.

If you’ve played different versions of this game then you will understand how much things have changed with Microsoft Flight Simulator since its inception. Thus today’s edition can represent an entire world through creation of virtual one for users. The original Microsoft Flight Simulator 1.0 only worked on IBM PCs. With this software package you could fly Cessna 182 across Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and New York City too.Coupled with that PC sound cards have already become completely different over these years bringing life into whole experience.Joystick support has also been improved considerably.

Most Comprehensive Home Flight Simulator Program:

2020s

The main reason why most people love the Microsoft Flight Simulator is simply because it is one of the best home flight simulators ever made. Therefore it is also widely recognized as the highest selling flight simulator which also happens to be the longest running.

The Microsoft Flight Simulator was significantly different from most other business centered applications developed by Microsoft. The release date was announced in late 2019 followed by its availability for PC users towards mid-2020 while Xbox version came out in early 2021. The latest version contains three different editions, which are standard, deluxe and premium deluxe. Each of them comes with a set of gameplay features. The outcome was apparent in the latest edition: well over 2 million enthusiastic gamers made Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 an instant hit upon its release. What is more, it became the fastest-selling launch version in the game’s 40-year history.

The main reason why Microsoft Flight Simulator succeeded was because of its vibrant community of players. There is every individual gamer contributing to that community.Even there have been countless livestream flights together with users’ contributions. The versions were consequently designed to cater to them in a better way.The extensibility of Azure technologies has helped quickly grow and evolve the Microsoft Flight Simulator.

It was through regular updates as well as third-party markets for airport add-ons, sceneries, and aircrafts that the game has managed to thrive. Moreover, Azure makes it possible to support and expand game engines used for adding new functionalities quickly into existing products such as Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Conclusion:

The Microsoft Flight Simulator became a sensational app that has pioneered next generation gaming. Its broad range of uses enabled it to achieve great heights. Nevertheless, the game still has further days ahead of it and players are projected to keep employing it for long.

  1. I have been looking at your site, and I do have a new PC coming that will work good with a flight simulator application, which I plan to start using.  This was interesting about Microsoft, and I had not purchase any simulator software yet.  Although, it looks like I will probably stick with Microsoft, alone because of the name and the quality that Microsoft usually provides.

    1. It is good you are getting new PC for flight simulator and u need Microsoft flight simulator to start flying virtually.

  2. I am a big gamer. I absolutely love playing games but I have not tried out any of these games. I will be sure to try them out. Who knows, I might end up liking them so thank you for this lovely review. I will be sure to share this article with my siblings as they too love to play games.

  3. It is amazing how far technology has come when it comes to games and simulators! I cant believe Microsoft Flight Simulator is almost 40 years old! its only 2 years younger than my husband lol! I used to play “Top Gun” on Sega Genesis a loooong time ago, I could never land without crashing. Hopefully I will have better luck with this latest version of MFS once my new gaming computer arrives!

    1. Good luck with the gaming, just make sure the computer meets it’s minimum requirement to play Flight Simulator 2020, you can set the graphic low or high and that depends if the computer have the latest graphiccards.

  4. The first thing I got exposed to was the active community of gammers using Microsoft Flight Simulator. They were so hyped that I began to be interested in the topic myself. And once I saw Microsoft Flight Simulator for myself I understood their excitement. I know there is a lot of room to grow. But currently, this software is crushing the competition.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. Flight Simulator was invented long time before Microsoft released Flight Simulator version.
